House fires can happen suddenly and spread fast. Being prepared isn’t just smart — it can save lives. Here’s a list of essential items and actions every home should have in place to stay fire-ready:
1. Smoke Alarms
Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas.
Test monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.
Replace the entire unit every 10 years.
2. Fire Extinguishers
Keep at least one multi-purpose (ABC-rated) fire extinguisher in the kitchen and garage.
Know how to use it — remember PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.
Check pressure gauges regularly to ensure they are charged.
3. Fire Escape Plan
Create a home fire escape plan with two ways out of every room.
Practice the plan with all household members at least twice a year.
Have at least one fire escape ladder on every floor. If possible, one in every room that’s not on a ground floor.
Designate a meeting spot outside — like a mailbox or neighbor’s porch.
4. Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Fires can produce deadly gases like carbon monoxide.
Install CO detectors near bedrooms and on every floor.
Test monthly and replace as recommended by the manufacturer.
5. Fire-Safe Storage
Use fireproof safes for important documents like passports, insurance papers, and digital backups.
Store flammable products (like paint or gasoline) away from heat sources.
6. Clear Exit Paths
Keep hallways and exits free of clutter.
Ensure windows and doors can be opened easily, especially in bedrooms.
7. Smart Fire Prevention
Never leave cooking unattended.
Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything flammable.
Don’t overload outlets or use damaged electrical cords.
8. Emergency Supplies Kit
Flashlights, batteries, water, basic first aid kit, and a copy of your escape plan.
A “Big-out-bag” with essentials in case you need to evacuate quickly.
Fire blankets by the stove and 1 per person in every sleeping area.
